The UVOT filter wheel is a limited life component. In order to extend the lifetime of the filter wheel, requests in UVOT modes other than filter-of-the-day require a strong scientific justification to be made in the UVOT Filter Justification box. Requests for observations that can be done from the ground or observations that do not require simultaneous multiwavelength observations will typically be done in filter-of-the-day. When making UVOT requests, please be advised that from a filter wear standpoint, there is very little difference in observing with one filter versus six. This is because of the way the filter wheel works. It rotates in only one direction, so if two observations in the filter of the day (say, UVW1) are separated by an observation in V band, the filter wheel has to rotate from the UVW1 position to the V band position for that observation, and then has to rotate the rest of the way around back to the UVW1 position for the next observation. If six filters are observed between two UVW1 observations, the filter wheel still has to rotate all the way around. Therefore, the only way to save filter wheel rotations is to minimize any changes of filter position between observations. We do this by observing most fields in the Filter of the Day, which changes daily on a 4 day rotation basis.
